Pop Rocks – StupidKrap Group Show @ Urban Uprising

James Jirat Patradoon

StupidKrap claims to be a website that sells art n’ shit. We’re fairly sure everyone who has any interest in the Australian urban art scene knows that it is so much more than that. StupidKrap is an army, recruiting it’s pick of artists from across the country. Pop Rocks is this year’s demonstration of their front line.

The show has been curated by StupidKrap co-creator Ben Frost who said “I wanted to put together an exhibition, that was about colour, vibrancy, and dynamism – all with the varying levels of social criticism”. There is no doubt that with Pop Rocks he achieved his goal.

The artists involved in the show are all represented by StupidKrap in some capacity. Interestingly the group includes artists at all different stages of their careers. It must be exciting for some of the fresh names to see their work hanging alongside relative veterans like Ben Frost and Anthony Lister.

Bei Badgirl

Ben Frost has done an amazing job with this show. With a network of amazing artists at his disposal, it would have been difficult deciding what would make the cut. There was a coherence and completeness to the collection. It was also exciting to see new work from some artists who we haven’t heard from in a while.

With around 30 artists exhibiting this really was a who’s-who of urban art. What you see here is only a taste of what this show has on display. Go check it out.

Anthony Lister

It was only because of a tightly controlled door list that we could take photos at all – it would’ve been too full otherwise! As it was, the show was packed… but if the heavies at the door hadn’t been ticking us off you would be looking at shots of ceiling, dandruff and bald patches.

It was difficult to drag ourselves away. This is what group shows should always be like – movers, shakers and curators take note.

hey… I thouroughly enjoyed the Pop Rocks show..

the only thing I can say is that it’s kinda frustrating when the wanky art types stop in the middle of the exhibition to have a wanky chat, which then inhibits others from seeing the art unless you’re an inch from the canvas/piece.

Why cant people go through, make notes or whatever and have their chats outside to allow other people to absorb the visual images which I’m sure the artists want us to..

    Just my 2 bobs worth….
