Sometimes, unintentionally, we stumble across gold. Walking into China Heights last Friday after a rubbish week, desperate for distraction, was one of those times. “Sundial” from Mark Alsweiler was a stunning exhibition. The artwork itself and the production of the exhibition just brought smiles to our faces.
Alsweiler’s oil paintings drew heavily on themes from South American folk art. Death, nature, animals and humans were all represented in a care-free, yet stunningly precise application of colour. Vast black or white backgrounds were used to explore elements of contrast and bring a focus and drama to his compositions. Also, China Heights looked excellent. Perhaps new paint, or perhaps just beer goggles. Whatever, it was all great.
