Last Friday a travelling show arrived at China Heights Gallery. A Study Of Hands is a project from curator Alexander Mitchell. The first unveiling of the works was in Melbourne at Backwoods Gallery. Mitchell has brought together a group of amazing artists to participate in an allegedly long term project that will see them produce art works around a particular study. This time the study was of hands.
Anthony Lister, Ashley Wood, Claudio Mantuano, Dave Kinsey, Haroshi, James Reka, James Greenaway, Kid Zoom, Mark Bode, Shohei Otomo, TwoOne, Syunoven + Uusgrow and Yuske Imai are the artists involved, so you can imagine what an impressive display they put on. Or just look at the photos and you can SEE it. Yep.
The exhibition was beautiful. Each work on the same paper and framed identically. Yet the interpretation of the subject was diverse and revealing – from the simple, free and gestural lines of Lister, to the delicate graphite detail of Kid Zoom.
For the first time in a long time, China Heights was almost empty. We have no explanation… perhaps things heated up after we left. But if you did miss the show, here are some photos!
