Now and then the stars align and amazing things happen. For us, this was when a friend mentioned that Søren Solkær Starbird was having an exhibition in Sydney. We had heard nothing about it, shame on us!
Closer is Starbird’s collection of rock star portraits that has been on tour around Europe and the UK since 2009. This is a collection of his favourite moments from covershoots, backstage passes and casual encounters. The Sydney show was, quite frankly, incredible. That said, only about 10 per cent of the entire series of 300+ images made it to Sydney. Luckily, the full catalogue was available in book form on the night.
Starbird was at the launch, happily chatting to fans and punters. He graciously signed books and posed for photos. Some of the crowd went a little crazy when one of the stars from the images, Wouter “Wally” De Backer (aka Goyte), showed up. A nice surprise especially for a few bored kids who’s parents had dragged them along to the exhibition (“can we go now?”).
The exhibition was a glimpse of Starbird’s incredible talent, eye for composition and connections within the music industry. It was inspiring.
The show will be up at Art Equity’s gallery until the 15th of June. This is, without a doubt, the most impressive exhibition of photography we’ve ever see outside of a major gallery, and that’s something special that should not be missed.
If you’re too lazy to leave the screen, you can check out most of the Sydney exhibition at Art Equity’s Online Catalogue.
