Zoe Johnson + Take T Yusuke @ ESP Gallery

What you see, What you believe - Take T. Yusuke, hot and flame worked uranium glass, wood, black light.

Another night, another opening. Feeling lazy and yet in desperate need of art, we decided to try something new. ESP Gallery was a very pleasant surprise (!), as were the artists exhibiting on this particular night.

What you see - Take T. Yusuke, mirror laminated glass, hand polished.

Although there were only 2 artists sharing the space they had done an amazing job at exploring their ideas and practice. They have produced a show that feels like something much grander than its flyer had us believe.

Take T Yusuke’s series of warped mirrored glass was a comment on the fact that we can never truly believe what we see. People delighted in interacting with the works. Seeing themselves and each other in crooked reflections.  His work “What you see, What you believe” (top image) was amazing. A neon lit human figure bursting forth organic forms.

Yusuke also made what you might call a performance art piece for the night. A two handled glass beer jug to help celebrate his opening in appropriate style. Halfway through his “performance” he told us the jug was like a chicken… profound somehow. We want one.

Black Murrini Bowl - Zoe Johnson, hot worked, fused, cold worked and slumped glass

Yasuke was sharing the spotlight with Zoe Johnson. This young woman has a lot on her mind. Known primarily for her work a a glass artist, her collection tonight showed that besides producing stunning tableware she also enjoys turning her hand to installation, sculpture and watercolour.

Pop - Zoe Johnson, fused glass, latex & acrylic additions.

Drip/drop black, grey - Zoe Johnson, fused and slumped glass.

Her “Drip/drop” series was so oozing (for lack of a better description): we wanted to touch everything.

Layer bowl - blue, black, teal - Zoe Johnson, cut and fused glass, slumped.

Pacman - Zoe Johnson, fused, carved and cold worked glass.

White Rabbit/Mad Hatter Installation - Zoe Johnson, blown glass, steel, mixed media.

Johnson’s installation “White Rabbit/Mad Hatter” was a standout.  she used themed objects beautifully assembled to produce the shillouette of the White Rabbit. We stood and marveled at this for a very long time. Spectacular!

Sorry it took us so long to find you ESP. We’ll definitely be back!
